Prescriptions for Pain

They march and they march

To clinic and ward and ER

They ask and seek and plead

Stop the pain that makes the heart bleed

The limb, the hip, the neck, the back

Physicians are a revolving door

Resolving this week’s symptoms

Providing different stories at each venue

To combat the pain, the ache, the loss, the need

Self medicating with extra doses

Pill containers empty

Out to the street corner

For heroin to score or crack, or meth or salt

They smoke, ingest, inject, snort and cuff

Any substance to reduce the dread

Then when all the games are over

The pain soothed for many years

the kidney collapses

impacting the liver and the heart

sepsis and amputations

strokes and cancer

In a year they are lost

A tick on a research study chart.
